Gutters Indianapolis
Maintaining a sound roof is at the top of the list of important home repairs since it keeps you and your family warm and dry, as well as everything else in your home. A new roof is an expensive investment. These basic roofing and gutters indianapolis will keep your existing roof in good shape for many years.
How Often Should Your Roof Shingles Be Replaced?
Any indicators of wear or damage should be addressed right away to prevent water from seeping under the shingles and damaging the wood sheathing beneath. Ignoring a problem, even if it looks to be minor, will hasten the need for a new roof and can add hundreds of dollars to the cost.
We'll go over the three most typical ones here: replacing asphalt shingles, glueing down a poorly curled shingle, and fixing damaged shingles.
Roofing Shingles Replacement
- Press down on the damaged shingle with a flat pry bar to pop out the roofing nails.
- You'll have to replace the entire shingle if part of it is gone. Check to see whether there are any shingles left over from the last time the roof was replaced (with any luck, the builder or the roofer who handled the job left some behind). If not, you'll have to buy a bundle of conventional three-tab shingles from a home centre or lumberyard ($15 to $20 per square—100 sq. ft.). Choose the closest match if you can't locate a perfect match.
- A hammer, a flat pry bar, a utility knife, and a handful of 11/4-in. roofing nails are needed to replace a damaged shingle. Each shingle is initially fixed with four nails; however, when the next shingle course above is set, the nails from that course also penetrate through the top edge of the shingles below.
- Begin removing the first row of nails by gently lifting the shingle immediately above the damaged one with the pry bar to remove it from the sealant strip. The first row of nails may be seen below.
- Pry upward with the pry bar slid under the damaged shingle. Remove the pry bar, press the shingle down, and pull out the nail once it has popped up about 1/4 inch. Carry on with the remaining three nails in the same manner. Then, using the pry bar, push the pry bar under the shingle directly above the damaged one and remove the second row of nails in the same manner. Pull out the damaged shingle after yanking all eight nails.
Roof Shingles: How to Shingle a Roof
- Use caulking to repair curled roof shingle corners.
- Place the new shingle on top of the old one. Make sure the shingles on either side are aligned.
- Asphalt shingles' corners frequently curl downward or upward as they age. If you observe a shingle starting to curl, you can prevent it from curling further by glueing the curled piece down.
- Apply a dab of roofing sealant (about $4 per 10-oz. tube) under the corner with a caulking gun. Place a brick on top of it (right) and leave it there for at least 24 hours until the sealant dries. It's as simple as that.
Repairing Roof Shingles That Have Cracked
- Carefully lift the upper shingle and use roofing nails to secure the new shingle.
- If a shingle is only cracked or torn, repair it rather than replace it. Apply a thick bead of roofing sealant under the crack to begin. Apply a second bead of sealant on top of the crack and press the shingle down. Then use a putty knife to spread the sealant.
- The nicest aspect about this fix is that it doesn't require anyone to know you did it. It's simple to hide: look for an accumulation of colourful granules that have washed down the roof from the shingles in the gutter. Then, to hide the repair, put some in a tiny cup and sprinkle them over it.
